The West Des Moines DMCA Chess Dojo is a structured training and socializing platform for scholastic (K-12) chess players. It provides an environment for students to learn and improve their chess skills while also fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship. 

$40 per month, per student

The Chess Dojo consists of distinct levels, each designed to cater to chess players of different skill sets and aspirations. By offering customized instruction at each level, we ensure that students receive the guidance and support they need to enhance their chess abilities. Our dedicated instructors work closely with students, identifying areas for improvement and nurturing their skills to help them grow as confident and capable chess players.

Each level offers a comprehensive and enriching experience, tailored to cater to the varying skill levels and aspirations of our students. Through our carefully curated curriculum and experienced coaching, we aim to ignite a lifelong passion for chess, nurturing confident and skillful chess players who not only excel on the board but also thrive in all aspects of life. Whether your child is a novice or an aspiring chess champion, we look forward to welcoming them into our vibrant chess community! 

Dojo Structure

  • 1-hour class sessions: Each level meets once a week for 1 hour
  • Free play time: From 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, chess sets are available for free play in the public area of the meeting space.*

White Belt (Novice) 

The White Belt level at the Chess Dojo is designed for new players, providing them with a solid foundation in the game of chess. Students with little to no previous chess experience will master the fundamental rules of chess, learn how to record their games, and become acquainted with essential chess terms. Throughout this level, emphasis is placed on creating a supportive and encouraging environment where young minds can explore and enjoy the game. White Belt students will also learn how to teach others the rules of chess and follow basic chess tournament etiquette, fostering leadership and communication skills.

No previous chess experience is required to join. Players under 8 require a parent present to attend.

Yellow Belt (Beginner)

Designed for students with a basic understanding of chess rules and gameplay. The Yellow Belt level delves deeper into advanced tactics, openings, and pawn structures. Students gain insights into common endgames, simple checkmates and develop an understanding of basic strategic concepts while developing life skills like self-discipline and concentration. In addition, they learn tournament rules and etiquette, preparing them for competitive play while building camaraderie among peers.

Orange Belt (Intermediate)

The Orange Belt level is tailored for intermediate players who have a basic understanding of the rules of chess. In this level, students will delve deeper into the intricacies of the game, exploring advanced tactics, openings, and pawn structures. They will also gain insights into common endgames, enhancing their overall strategic prowess. Alongside chess-specific skills, Yellow Belt and Above students will develop transferable life skills such as self-discipline, concentration, and long-term planning. This level challenges students to apply their knowledge to practical gameplay situations, building their confidence and resilience on the chessboard. The learning environment remains engaging and enjoyable, fostering camaraderie among peers and strengthening their passion for chess.

Green Belt + (Advanced, by invitation only)

The Advanced Level at the Chess Dojo is an exclusive tier reserved for the most dedicated and committed chess players who demonstrate exceptional skills and a strong desire to improve their play. Entry to this level is by invitation only, based on the evaluation of the Chess Dojo instructors. Advanced students will engage in high-level gameplay, tactical exercises, and strategic analysis, honing their abilities to a competitive standard. This level is geared towards serious chess enthusiasts who aspire to excel in tournaments and seek continuous growth in their chess journey. Instructors will provide personalized guidance and challenge advanced players to reach their full potential, pushing the boundaries of their strategic thinking and decision-making abilities.

The classes are led by Coach Jim Freerksen, a professional chess coach since 2015 with extensive experience in playing chess as well. He has coached Iowa state champions and focuses on bringing joy to his students and igniting their passion for chess. Apart from teaching chess, Coach Jim incorporates character building in his lessons, emphasizing qualities like persistence, effort, and a positive attitude as students learn and grow in the game.

Tournament Opportunities

Being part of the Chess Dojo opens doors to chess tournaments, including state championship tournaments. Competing in these events allows students to put their skills to the test, gain valuable experience, and build confidence.

What is the process to register for the Free Trial session?To register for the Free Trial, please complete the registration form at the link given at the top of this page. This will allow your child to attend one session and experience the Chess Dojo before committing to a membership.

What are the age groups catered to by the Chess Dojo?The Chess Dojo welcomes children from 1st through 12th grade. We provide structured training suitable for varying skill levels, from beginners to more experienced players. Typically, students below 3rd Grade should begin in the White Belt level, and may progress to Yellow Belt when they are ready. Older students that already have chess experience and understand the rules may begin at the Yellow Belt level.

Does my child need previous chess experience to join?No prior chess experience is required to join the Chess Dojo. We welcome complete beginners and strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.

Students who are new to chess and need to learn or review the rules should start in the White Belt level. Students who already have a solid chess foundation and understand US Chess Federation tournament chess rules are able to start in the Yellow Belt level. Feel free to contact Head Coach Jim Freerksen with any questions regarding the appropriate level for your student.

Where is the Chess Dojo located?The West Des Moines Chess Dojo is conveniently located at the Valley Community Center, 4444 Fuller Rd, West Des Moines. Classes take place in the Conference Room.

How often do the clubs meet?Clubs meet once a week. Currently, West Des Moines dojo meets on Tuesday evenings at the Valley Community Center.

Is it mandatory for my child to attend every week?While we encourage regular attendance for optimal learning and progress, we understand that scheduling conflicts may arise. Attending consistently will enhance your child's development, but it is not mandatory. If your child cannot make it to a session, kindly inform the instructor in advance.

Can I cancel my child's membership if needed?Yes, you have the flexibility to cancel your child's membership at any time. Simply send an email to katie@dsmchess.com to initiate the cancellation process.
